I have been teaching at John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore since 2004. My teaching course load varies from year to year and has included the following courses: The Living Environment, Introduction to Research, Marine Biology 1 & 2, and Forensic Science.
After pursuing my BS in Psychobiology from SUNY Binghamton, I began to work for New York State Parks as an environmental educator. I was torn between veterinary school, and a career in science research. After working as a teacher for the Parks, it became clear to me that teaching, in fact, was something I was good at! I really enjoyed leading school and scout groups outdoors to learn about science. In addition, I received positive feedback from both my students and my supervisors. After a year of working, I pursued my Masters degree in Science Teaching from SUNY Stonybrook.
In addition to being a dedicated full-time science teacher, I have also served as Assistant Swim Coach here in Bellmore-Merrick for five years, as well as advisor to the JFK Science Olympiad team.
I am a true animal lover. Currently we have 2 rescue dogs, 5 chickens, a hamster, some lizards and some toads. Hiking, camping, beaching and traveling, are all things I enjoy in my free time. My favorite vacation ever was a trip I took while working here. Every few years, Hofstra University offers a trip to the Galapagos Islands for 3 weeks. Led by amazing Geology and Biology professors, this was truly the trip of a lifetime. I highly suggest it.
My oldest daughter, Juliet, was born in 2011 and my youngest, Elizabeth in 2014. Becoming a mother has given me an even broader perspective on teaching my students. I treat them as I hope my daughters' future teachers will treat them, with respect, kindness, and encouraging the curiosity and problem solving of life-long learning.
